Brewing the Perfect Gallon of Sweet Tea

Sweet Tea

How many tea bags do you need for a gallon of sweet tea?

I’ve found the magic number to be 12 regular-sized tea bags per gallon of sweet tea.

Two glasses of sweet tea

Hello to my fellow sweet tea lovers! There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot summer’s day than homemade sweet tea. But how much tea should you use to brew a full gallon? Here is the perfect ratio:

Using too little tea can result in a thin, watery-tasting tea. But too much tea can overpower the sweetener and leave you with an unbalanced, bitter brew.

After plenty of trial and error, I’ve found the magic number to be 12 regular-sized tea bags per gallon of sweet tea. This provides just the right concentration of rich tea flavors to meld perfectly with sugar or honey.

My Favorite Gallon of Sweet Tea Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 12 regular black tea bags (or equivalent loose-leaf tea)
  • 1-gallon water
  • 1-1 1/2 cups white sugar, to taste
  • Sliced lemons for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Bring 1 gallon of water to a rolling boil in a large pot. Remove from heat.
  2. Add 12 tea bags and steep for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Remove the tea bags and stir in 1 cup of white sugar until dissolved. Taste and add more sugar if desired.
  4. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled.
  5. Serve sweet tea over ice with sliced lemons.

So there you have it. 12 tea bags make the perfect gallon of sweet tea. Adjust the tea and sugar amounts to suit your taste preferences. I hope you’ll give this recipe a try.
